Transport Canada Minister Marc Garneau Visits Port aux Basques Terminal

by Paul Griffin, President and CEO

Earlier today, Marine Atlantic had the pleasure of welcoming the federal Minister of Transport, the Honourable Marc Garneau, to our terminal facilities in Port aux Basques. I was pleased to join the Minister and our interim Board of Directors Chair Sharon Duggan in providing an overview of the positive things that have been taking place with our service over the past few years.

During his visit, the minister had the opportunity to tour the terminal and get a first-hand view of how the $22 million announced in Budget 2016 will benefit Marine Atlantic’s operations. This recent funding investment will directly benefit both the Port aux Basques and North Sydney terminals in upgrading our mooring system to increase safety, and enhance dock fenders to protect our vessels and docks. We will also be undertaking enhancements to the Port aux Basques terminal storm sewer system to improve operating conditions in the terminal yard.

On behalf of Marine Atlantic, I would like to thank Minister Garneau for visiting our operations and witnessing the positive impact the Government of Canada’s investment has had on our service. I reassured the Minister that we will continue our efforts to become a modern, efficient and reliable service for our customers into the future.
