Earlier today, Transport Minister Lisa Raitt joined Marine Atlantic’s President and CEO Paul Griffin for a tour of the new terminal building currently under construction in North Sydney, Nova Scotia. The new facility is scheduled to be open and operational in spring 2015.
The new terminal building, including design, site preparation and construction, is estimated to cost approximately $20 million. The building is being constructed at a location on the opposite side of the marshalling yard from the existing terminal building, adjacent to downtown businesses. The new building will be modern, efficient, environmentally friendly, and offer new amenities to customers such as a commercial driver seating lounge area.
Made possible by the Government of Canada’s five-year, $521 million investment in Marine Atlantic announced in Budget 2010, upwards of 80 local tradespeople have been working on the new building for over a year. This project builds upon others that have been undertaken over the past four years including upgrades to Marine Atlantic’s fleet and docking infrastructure, new buildings, expanded marshalling yards, improved terminal infrastructure and enhanced business processes at all three of the Corporation’s terminal properties.
We thank the Minister for her continuing interest in strengthening Marine Atlantic’s service and for the opportunity to showcase the newest infrastructure addition to the North Sydney terminal property. These new investments will continue to help in our efforts of becoming a modern and efficient Corporation offering a high level of customer service. We are very excited to have this new facility ready and operational for our customers in the months ahead.
