On Sunday afternoon, Transport Minister Lisa Raitt toured the site of Marine Atlantic’s new terminal building being constructed in North Sydney. The construction of this new terminal building has been made possible through the Government of Canada’s 5-year funding commitment announced in Budget 2010 and is expected to be open and operational during fiscal year 2015-16.
Joined by Marine Atlantic Board Chair Rob Crosbie and President and CEO Paul Griffin, the Minister had the opportunity to witness how the government’s investments are enhancing our service for the thousands of customers travelling between Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia each year.
The new North Sydney terminal building including design, site preparation and construction, is estimated to cost approximately $20 million. It will be modern, efficient, environmentally friendly, and offer new amenities to our customers. We are very excited with the strengthened customer service opportunities that will be available.
This project builds upon the many infrastructure upgrades that have taken place at all three of our ports in buildings, docks, marshalling yards and related projects to modernize and strengthen all aspects of our service over the past few years.
We thank the Minister for her visit and her interest in Marine Atlantic’s ongoing commitment to become a modern and efficient organization offering a high level of customer service. We look forward to the completion of this facility that will offer customers a better travel experience.
